Neuromodulation is one of the fastest-growing branches of medicine in this century. Though neuromodulation has become synonymous with some flagship procedures like deep brain stimulation (DBS), it does not end there. Over the last few years, the scope of neuromodulation has expanded to cover non-nervous system organs. Newer implants and wearables have now made it easy to target distant, peripheral organs. As electrical impulses are the language of the neural networks in the body, it will be apt to say that we are witnessing the growth of ‘Electroceuticals’.
Though DBS has established as a therapy for Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders it is also being increasingly used for psychiatric disorders, pain, epilepsy, memory disorders and addiction. Same is true with spinal cord stimulation (SCS). The initial use of SCS for pain has now expanded to indications like angina, peripheral vascular disease, heart failure. In addition, other modes of neuromodulation like peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS), vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) are increasingly used for neuromodulation. The concept of neuromodulation is now exported out of brain disorders to other systemic disorders like obstructive sleep apnea, bladder and bowel dysfunction.
In India, we are witnessing continued growth of neuromodulation as the number of centres doing it and number of implants are growing every year for the last decade. This supplement tries to cover all the established and growing indications of neuromodulation. The articles in the supplement are tailored to provide the basic information about technique, indications, and outcomes as well as recent advances and updates in this field. It will be useful for beginners in the field as well as established practitioners.
In future, modulation of neural networks will play a major role in controlling and modifying various neurological and non-neurological diseases.
