The book 'Manual of Peripheral Nerve Surgery: From the Basics to Complex Procedures' is composed of 23 chapters with 267 illustrations of exceptional quality. The book starts with an overview of the surgical anatomy of peripheral nerves, the pathophysiology of nerve injuries, and also deals in detail with the clinical aspects, electro-diagnostics and imaging of peripheral nerve lesions and injuries. A thorough review of the anatomy of peripheral nerves with schematic illustrations and images of the cadaveric dissections of brachial and lumbosacral plexus aid in the understanding of the complex anatomy for beginners. Several chapters focus on the surgical repair of nerve lesions, the timing of intervention and the outcomes achieved following intervention for nerve injuries. Various aspects of the peripheral nerve disorders, including injuries, entrapment, facial nerve surgeries, compression neuropathy, tumors, and neuropathic pain management are presented with sufficient details. The complex and specialized topics like gunshot wound to peripheral nerves, neonatal brachial plexus lesions and injuries, and benign and malignant peripheral nerve tumors are well-illustrated. However, I would have personally liked to see a more in-depth description of the neurotization procedures in dealing with brachial plexus injuries, that is covered in Chapter 17.
This book is on the road to achieving a landmark status in the management of peripheral nerve injuries as it helps the newcomers to evolve their techniques from 'the basics to the most complex procedures'. This book is comprehensive, extremely interesting, concise, opulently informative and easy to digest. This book will be of interest to surgeons in multiple specialties who deal with peripheral nerve disorders and are keen to learn the indications of surgery on peripheral nerves, the operative steps, and the methods of follow-up evaluation.
One suggestion for future editions would be to include a chapter on the recent areas of innovation in peripheral nerve surgery. Overall, this is a vital resource for trainees and practicing surgeons in a number of surgical subspecialties who are desirous in achieving dexterity in peripheral nerve surgery.
