This picture of “Man's craft by the side of God's canvas” has been contributed by Dr. Sivashanmugam Dhandapani, Additional Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. Despite it being the winter month of January, it was a scorching and frenzied road trip from Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of peninsular India, to Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, often called “God's own country.” Poovar is a small town on the way, having an estuary of the Neyyar river with the Arabian sea. The boat ride here in the evening was soothing to the soul, making us forget the prior pandemonium. As the boat crossed the backwaters at the intersection of the golden sand beach and the rock holding a replica of Michelangelo's ‘Pieta,’ the water was sparkling like gold due to the reflection of sunset in the horizon. The scene made an appropriate setting for capturing an idyllic moment. Man's chef d'oeuvre or the greatest creation merely becomes a shadow in the light of Nature's beauty. In the words of William Wordsworth: “A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills…” I remembered the times of intraoperative crisis in neurosurgery when a calm demeanour changes not only the ambience but also the outcome. This blissful photograph was captured with Canon EOS 700D using aperture settings F/10, exposure 1/250th of second, focal length 55 mm and ISO 100.
